Cast Announced For ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ As Production Begins

Adaptation of George R. R. Martin's novella "The Hedge Knight"

by Dave Elliott

HBO has announced the cast for the latest ‘Game Of Thrones’ spin-off A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, based on George R. R. Martin’s novella “The Hedge Knight”.

A century before the events of “Game of Thrones,” two unlikely heroes wandered Westeros… a young, naïve but courageous knight, Ser Duncan the Tall, and his diminutive squire, Egg. Set in an age when the Targaryen line still holds the Iron Throne, and the memory of the last dragon has not yet passed from living memory, great destinies, powerful foes, and dangerous exploits all await these improbable and incomparable friends.

It was previously announced that the lead roles would be taken by Peter Claffey (‘Wreck’, ‘Bad Sisters’) as Ser Duncan the Tall (pictured above), and Dexter Sol Ansell (‘Robin and the Hood’, ‘Hullraisers’, ‘The Midwich Cuckoos’) as Egg. They will be joined by Finn Bennett (‘True Detective: Night Country’, ‘Domina’) as Aerion Targaryen, Olivier Award-winner Bertie Carvel (‘Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell’, ‘Baghdad Central’, ‘The Crown’) as Baelor Targaryen, Tanzyn Crawford (‘Servant’, ‘Tiny Beautiful Things’) as Tanselle, Daniel Ings (‘The Crown’, ‘The Gentlemen’, ‘Sex Education’) as Ser Lyonel Barotheon, and Sam Spruell (‘Legend’, ‘Fargo’, ‘Doctor Who’ ‘Liar’) as Maekar Targaryen.

Sarah Adina Smith (“Lessons In Chemistry,” “Hanna,” “Buster’s Mal Heart”) has joined to direct three of the six episodes. Previously announced director and executive producer Owen Harris (‘Black Mirror’, ‘Brave New World’, ‘Mrs. Davis’) will also direct three episodes. The series is written and executive produced by George R.R. Martin and Ira Parker (‘House Of The Dragon’, ‘Better Things’). Executive produced by Ryan Condal, Vince Gerardis, Owen Harris, and Sarah Bradshaw.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms‘ does not have a premiere date, but is expected to land on HBO in the USA in late 2025. As to where it lands in the UK, that rather depends on what deal Sky has struck by that point with Warner Bros Discovery to carry HBO content, as the current agreement stops around the end of 2025… If you want to keep track of this or any other shows, you can add them via our Never Miss system, and you’ll be notified when they get a UK premiere date.
