‘Sons Of Anarchy’ star Charlie Hunnam has landed the lead role in ‘Criminal‘, Prime Video’s upcoming adaptation of the multi-award-winning Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips graphic novel series.
Criminal is an interlocking universe of crime stories based on the multi-Eisner Award-winning graphic novel series created by Ed Brubaker (Westworld, Batman: Caped Crusader) and Sean Phillips, who are both set as executive producers for the series. Brubaker, who wrote the graphic novel and the pilot script, will co-showrun with acclaimed crime fiction author Jordan Harper (Hightown, Gotham, The Mentalist).
Hunnam will star as the protagonist, Leo, a brilliant master thief who sees all the angles, and specializes in plans with no guns and no violence. Like a chess player, Leo thinks three moves ahead. Other crooks think he’s a coward, especially compared to his father Tommy, who went to jail for murdering the most feared man in the city, Teeg Lawless.
Charlie Hunnam is best known for his role as Jax Teller in the brilliant FX series ‘Sons of Anarchy’. He’s also appeared in multiple Guy Richie movies, such as ‘The Gentlemen’ and ‘King Arthur: Legend of the Sword’, and recently popped up in Zack Snyder’s ‘Rebel Moon – Part One’ and Apple series ‘Shantaram’. His earlier work includes Russell T Davies’ ‘Queer as Folk’, and he got his start on the classic British YA show, ‘Byker Grove’.
Hunnam joins the previously announced series regular cast which includes Adria Arjona (‘Good Omens’, ‘Andor’) as “Greta”, a sharp-tongued top-level car thief and driver and the widowed mother; Richard Jenkins (‘Dahmer -?Monster’, ‘Six Feet Under’, ‘Berlin Station’) who plays “Ivan”, Leo’s dad’s best friend, who has always been an uncle figure to him; And Kadeem Hardison (‘A Different World’, ‘Teenage Bounty Hunters’, ‘Supernatural’) as “Gnarly”, an old friend of Leo and Ivan, former boxer and local legend.
The series is executive produced by Ed Brubaker and Jordan Harper, alongside Sean Phillips, Sarah Carbiener, and Phillip Barnett. Directing duo Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden (‘Captain Marvel’, ‘Masters of the Air’, ‘Billions’) will direct the first four episodes. Legendary Television will also serve as an executive producer. The series is produced by Amazon MGM Studios.
