‘Peaky Blinders’ Film Officially Ordered By Netflix

Flat caps at the ready!

The long-rumoured Peaky Blinders film has officially been greenlit by Netflix, in association with BBC Film, and sees (the now Oscar-winner) Cillian Murphy return as Tommy Shelby, along with a script from Steven Knight, and Tom Harper directing.

“It seems like Tommy Shelby wasn’t finished with me,” commented Murphy. “It is very gratifying to be re-collaborating with Steven Knight and Tom Harper on the film version of Peaky Blinders. This is one for the fans.”

The film, which goes into production later this year, will be an epic continuation of the multi-award-winning, six-season gangster series that followed the Shelby family as they navigated a world wracked with radical social, economic, and political change in the early 1900s.

Tom Harper, who directed the first season of the drama, returns behind the camera for the film, with a script from ‘Peaky Blinders’ creator Steven Knight. “When I first directed Peaky Blinders over 10 years ago, we didn’t know what the series would become, but we did know that there was something in the alchemy of the cast and the writing that felt explosive,” said Harper. “Peaky has always been a story about family — and so it’s incredibly exciting to be reuniting with Steve and Cillian to bring the movie to audiences across the world on Netflix.”

We don’t really know anything about the plot of the film as details are being kept tightly under wraps for the moment. When we last saw Tommy, he was riding into the sunset (or overcast Birmingham landscape) on a white horse, intent on starting a new life away from his criminal past. However, creator Steven Knight did give a little hint of things to come, saying “I’m genuinely thrilled that this movie is about to happen. It will be an explosive chapter in the Peaky Blinders story. No holds barred. Full on Peaky Blinders at war.”

If you’re wondering why this is on Netflix and not the BBC, I would hazard a guess it was a matter of cost. Netflix carried the series internationally, and also in the UK following an exclusive run on the BBC first, turning it into a global phenomenon, so it is the natural home for a project of this size.

The ‘Peaky Blinders‘ film does not have a premiere date but will film later this year. If you want to keep track of this or any other show, you can add them via our Never Miss system, and you’ll be notified when it gets a UK premiere date.
