Paramount+ announces that Richard Gere joins the espionage political thriller The Agency cast alongside the previously announced Michael Fassbender & Jeffrey Wright.

Based on the critically acclaimed French series ‘Le Bureau’, the political thriller follows Martian (two-time Academy Award nominee Fassbender), a covert CIA agent, ordered to abandon his undercover life and return to London Station. When the love he left behind reappears, romance reignites. His career, his real identity and his mission are pitted against his heart; hurling them both into a deadly game of international intrigue and espionage.

“Michael Fassbender is one of the most gifted actors of our time,” said Chris McCarthy, Paramount Global Co-CEO and President/CEO, Showtime & MTV Entertainment Studios. “He brings a gravitas and nuanced complexity to every character he inhabits which is why we are so excited for him to star in The Agency as we start to roll out our new slate of Showtime originals.”

Humanitarian, actor, producer and Golden Globe winner, Richard Gere joins the drama as “Bosko,” the London Station Chief with a storied past after serving as an 8-year undercover agent. Gere is known for his roles in films such as ‘An Officer and a Gentleman’, ‘Days of Heaven’, ‘American Gigolo’, ‘Pretty Woman’,Primal Fear’, ‘Chicago’, ‘Shall We Dance’ and ‘Internal Affairs’.

“Richard Gere is in a class of his own, adored by generations of fans worldwide for his exceptional ability to infuse depth and authenticity into every role he plays,” continues McCarthy. “We are delighted to have him join our extraordinary cast.”

Jeffrey Wright will play Henry, the Director of Operations and mentor to Fassbender’s Martian. Wright is a Tony, Emmy, AFI, and Golden Globe Award-winning actor who has enjoyed an illustrious career spanning the worlds of theatre, film, and television. He can currently be seen giving one of the best performances of his career in Orion Pictures/Amazon MGM Studios’ ‘American Fiction’, written and directed by Cord Jefferson. He previously starred in HBO hit series ‘Westworld’, and will join season two of the award-winning HBO drama ‘The Last Of Us’.

“Jeffrey Wright doesn’t just portray characters – he inhabits them completely, infusing each role with raw, emotional power and profound, psychological insight,” comments McCarthy.

‘The Agency’ is a fresh take on the critically acclaimed hit French drama Le Bureau des Légendes which centres on the daily life and missions of agents within France’s principal external security service (DGSE). The New York Times named it one of the top international shows of the decade, and NPR has called it “addictively suspenseful” and “one of the best TV shows in the world.”

Golden Globe nominee and multi-BAFTA winner Joe Wright (Pride and Prejudice, The Darkest Hour and The Atonement) will direct and executive produce the new drama series and Tony Award-winning writer Jez Butterworth and John-Henry Butterworth (Ford v Ferrari, Edge of Tomorrow) will executive produce and write all ten episodes.

Commissioned by Showtime/MTV Entertainment Studios and produced in association with 101 Studios, the drama is executive produced by Keith Cox and Nina L. Diaz of Showtime/MTV Entertainment Studios; David C. Glasser, Ron Burkle, David Hutkin and Bob Yari of 101 Studios (Yellowstone); George Clooney and Grant Heslov for Smokehouse Pictures; Alex Berger for TOP-The Originals Productions; Ashley Stern and Pascal Breton for Federation Studios/Federation Entertainment of America; and Michael Fassbender.

The Agency‘ is currently in production in London, so does not yet have a premiere date.
